Normandy is steeped in history. Joan of Arc was burned at the stake here in 1432. Monet used one of Rouen's magnificent 13th century cathedrals as the subject of a series of paintings. The last successful invasion of Britain left Normandy in 1066 and the liberation of the western European mainland from the Nazis began in 1944 on the now famous beaches of Calvados. In the region's capital, Caen, lie the ruins of William the Conqueror's enormous stronghold.
